Relaxation drink sickens kids, faces scrutiny

Recently our Montana readers have seen stories regarding deaths linked to energy drinks such as Five Hour Energy and Monster. Apparently energy drinks aren't the only beverage under scrutiny of product liability, as a new type of "relaxation" drink on the market is in the news for making children sick.

This drink, Marley's Mellow Mood, is marketed to reduce stress, the opposite of an energy drink, and the label states that it may cause drowsiness. The label also states that it is not intended to consumption by children, yet middle school and high school children became very ill after purchasing it at their school cafeteria.

The symptoms of the children are not clear, but several middle school students were sent home after having consumed the beverage. These types of drinks are under investigation by the FDA as more and more cases seem to be reported linking death to beverages like these.

Not only are the makers of Marley's Mellow Mood under attack for this, but the school administrators. Hospital bills for the children who were sickened by the beverage are expensive, and the parents of the children absolutely could choose to file a lawsuit against the school.

The label says right on the can that this drink is not to be consumed by children, yet it was still being sold at a middle school. Reportedly, the school district is still investigating the illnesses. It is unclear at this time whether the schools have taken the relaxation beverages off of their cafeteria shelves.
