Equipment defect alarms scuba divers in Montana

Approximately 110,000 diving equipment items manufactured in China and Mexico were recently recalled by their manufacturer in cooperation with the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission after a few divers reported problems that could pose substantial danger to users in certain circumstances.

According to a recent report, the equipment defects were found in buoyancy compensators manufactured by Aqua Lung. The compensators are used by divers to help them achieve buoyancy and rise to the surface of a body of water during a dive.

The products were found to be defective because their rubber handles tend to disengage when users try to remove the weight pockets in order to surface. Such defects pose a drowning risk. The company reported 236 cases of handles becoming disengaged from the weight pockets, although no injuries were reported.

The equipment was sold at sporting goods and scuba diving stores across the country from September 2008 to September 2012. The recall affects all compensators with the Surelock II label. Customers who return the units are being offered free inspections of their units and free replacements if needed.

Although products are created and manufactured to meet market needs and secure profits for their developers and marketers, customer safety should always be a primary concern of manufacturers and distributors. Failure to keep safety in mind can make a manufacturer liable if a product defect is found to have played a role in an accident, injury or death. Such a scenario may give rise to personal injury claims based on product liability law.

In cases of product liability, victims who sustain injuries may be eligible for compensation, which can be obtained through personal injury claims. The compensation may be eligible to cover hospitalization costs, lost wages and other incurred expenses.
