Weight-loss dietary supplement recalled due to liver damage

Many Billings, Montana, residents may use dietary supplements to help with weight loss, weight control and general well-being. Dietary supplements come in various forms supplied by different manufacturers and help provide adequate daily intake of essential nutrients, such as amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Although such supplements seem beneficial, sometimes they come with certain risks, which may result in illness or injury to consumers. There is a potential danger that could harm the consumer.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has reported a product recall of one such supplement, OxyElite Pro, which is manufactured by USPLabs. A letter to USPLabs from the FDA requested that the product manufacturer voluntarily remove its products from the market, including OxyElite Pro Ultra-Intense Thermo capsules and OxyElite Super Thermo Powder, after they were linked to liver problems resulting in illness and one fatality.

The FDA claimed that comsumption of OxyElite products contributed to 27 of 46 cases of liver illness, reported by the Hawaii Department of Health. Of those patients, 63 percent stated that OxyElite was the only dietary supplement consumed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 56 cases of liver illness that were connected to consumption of OxyElite Pro.

Manufacturers and distributors are legally responsible for ensuring that a product is safe to consume before sale, thereby preventing any injuries or health complications. If a product is found to be defective or causes injury or health complications to any Montana resident, manufacturers may be financially liable for the damages that the product has caused. A successful products liability lawsuit may enable an injured consumer to secure fair compensation for damages caused by a dangerous product.
