Fatal accident statistics on U.S. highways showed rise in 2016

Montanans who use the state roadways and any other methods of transportation to get around should have a grasp of the dangers that lurk and can cause injuries or death. Statistics are beneficial to knowing what to look for and in understanding trends. New data from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) indicates that there was a rise in overall transportation accidents from 2015 to 2016.

Highway deaths accounted for 95 percent of these deaths in 2016. According to the statistics from 2016, more than 39,000 people died in transportation accidents. That was an increase of more than 2,000 from 2015. Other methods of transportation also had an increase with more people dying on the railroads and in marine accidents. There was a slight reduction in aviation deaths. The chairman of NTSB says that new recommendations are being put in place to try and lower the number of fatalities in transportation.

There are other important facts that came up with this research. They include: deaths on U.S. roadways rose by nearly 2,000 from 2015 to 2016 to 37,461; the number of deaths in passenger vehicles rose to 13,412 from 12,761; deaths on railroads rose by 25 to 733; marine fatalities rose by 42 to 730 with recreational boating accidents accounting for almost 96 percent of these and aviation deaths lowered by four to 412.

There are many explanations as to why there might be an increase in the incidences of a fatal car crash, a fatal truck accident, a fatal boating accident or a fatal railroad accident. Perhaps it was due to someone who was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, was being reckless or was multitasking or distracted by using a smartphone or other device while behind the wheel. Regardless, when a family has suffered the loss of a loved one in an accident, there will be a litany of issues to navigate, including financial and personal matters. A lawyer who is experienced in filing claims after a fatal accident can help with seeking compensation.
