Drunk Driving Negatively Impacts Lives in Montana

Many Billings, Montana, residents are no strangers to the potential impact of a drunk driving accident. In fact, they may have heard of or read many stories about people injured or killed due to a car accident caused by a drunk driver. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every three fatal accidents involves a drunk driver.

For example, according to a recent news story, a group of teens left Billings, Montana, heading to Shepherd, Montana, to check out a house party. They left the party in the early morning hours with the designated sober driver behind the wheel. Despite that fact, the vehicle occupied by those careful teens was struck head on by a car driven by a drunk driver. Ten teenagers suffered injuries. Although most of them recovered from that incident, the accident changed their lives in an instant.

Law enforcement officers are on full alert to catch drunk drivers, always looking for the drunk driver who threatens road safety. According to the report, aside from regular traffic stops performed by police, the public's help in stopping drunk drivers will make a difference. The Billings Police Department stated that 227 drivers were pulled over and charged with their first driving under the influence offense this year, while an additional 75 drivers were charged with a second drunk driving offense.

Drunk driving is not only illegal, but also endangers the safety of other people on the roads. Unfortunately, a car accident as a result of drunk driving, is likely to result in injuries or even fatalities.

It is important to keep in mind that a car accident in Montana caused by a suspected drunk driver also may give rise to a personal injury claim. In such a case, a lawsuit may provide compensation for the victim's medical expenses and other costs related to recovery. Awards for emotional damages may be available, as well.
